This initiative is 100% voluntary, powered entirely by a "coalition of the willing." We aren't here to pressure anyone into changing their space. Instead, we are simply providing the spark, native plant knowledge, and resources for neighbors who are excited to opt in and transform their little part of the alleyway. (Renters, just be sure to get your landlord’s thumbs-up first!) To Be Completely Clear: The effort to create native wildflower corridors is a grassroots, neighbor-led effort. It is not a Metro government program, nor is it funded or managed by the city. There is no top-down mandate or municipal budget here. It is simply neighbors coming together, on their own dime and at their own pace, to bring our shared alleyways to life.

Biodiversity and Pollinator Support: Establish contiguous alleyway floral patches that serve as miniature ecosystems. Utilizing native plantings provides critical habitat, food, and nectar corridors for declining urban pollinators like bees and butterflies. Traffic Calming and Safety: Deploy strategic, native landscaping to introduce visual friction into active alleys. Naturally narrowing the visual right-of-way subconsciously encourages slower driving speeds, directly improving pedestrian safety. Environmental Health: Leverage native root networks and foliage to absorb carbon dioxide, mitigate local air pollution, and act as passive stormwater management systems to absorb and filter urban runoff. Litter Reduction and Beautification: Transform neglected alleys into vibrant, cared-for green spaces. Fostering a visible culture of community stewardship naturally deters illegal dumping and littering while boosting neighborhood morale. Community Health and Well-Being: Improve public health by restoring neglected pathways into inviting spaces for daily physical activity. Regular, passive exposure to these pocket green spaces reduces mental fatigue and lowers urban stress.

The Origins of this Effort

For over a decade, Jim Hawk worked alongside residents and neighborhood organizations across Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County. During this time, he kept hearing two frustrations (among many) from neighbors: reckless speeding and chronic litter. Then came the pandemic. Jim noticed an inspiring global trend emerging—communities reclaiming neglected urban alleyways and transforming them into vibrant wildflower corridors. He realized these green spaces could naturally slow down traffic and deter littering, all while supporting pollinators, improving the environment, and boosting neighborhood well-being. But while local organizations were intrigued, most were simply too overwhelmed by the massive, rapid changes reshaping the city to take on a new project. Today, as a passionate native gardener and active member of Historic Edgefield Neighbors, Jim has brought this vision home to East Nashville. Met with great enthusiasm, the Native Wildflower Corridor Initiative was born—not as a top-down mandate, but as a grassroots invitation to rethink how we care for our shared spaces.

Do It Yourself (DIY) vs. Hiring a Professional to Do It

Deciding whether to build a garden yourself or hire a professional is all about what you want to trade: Do you want to trade your time and hard work to learn something new and make it exactly how you want it? Or, would you rather pay someone else to do the heavy lifting so you can get the results you want right away without the stress?If you’re trying to decide, ask yourself these three simple questions:Do I have the time? Creating a garden will take hours of work. Are you excited to spend your time doing that, or is your schedule already too full?What is my goal? If you love the idea of learning how plants grow and getting your hands dirty, go for it! If you just want a cool backyard space to hang out in as soon as possible, a pro might be better.What is my budget? Doing it yourself is usually cheaper, but you have to buy all the tools and supplies. Hiring someone costs more money, but they already have the tools and the experience to get the job done right the first time.

How Much is This Going to Cost?

To give you an idea of pricing, we’ve based these estimates on a typical East Nashville alley right-of-way measuring 50 ft. × 4 ft. (200 sq. ft.). DIY (Do It Yourself)Your cost will depend on how quickly you want to see blooms versus how much you want to spend. These estimates include site preparation, aggressive invasive treatment, native wildflower plants, sand (for seeds), compost (for plugs) and cleanup. Seed Only$72 – $245Maximum savings (requires the most patience).Seeds + Plugs$302 – $705A balance of cost-savings and faster growth.Plugs Only$532 – $1,165High visual impact by the very first spring.You can also mix in larger potted plants, but they run $15 to $25 each and will quickly drive up your total budget. Professional InstallationIf you prefer to leave the dirt to the pros, expect a full-service installation to run $1,200 to $3,600 ($6 to $18 per sq. ft.).This should include site preparation, any soil amendments, native plant materials, labor and cleanup.

Trouble-Shooting and Neighbor Relations

Transforming a shared alleyway can spark curiosity—and occasionally, questions or concerns from nearby residents. Here is how to navigate common neighborhood questions and keep the peace while growing the corridor. Won't these plants attract rats, mice, or ticks? The Reality: Rodents are attracted to food sources (like unsecure trash bins, dropped birdseed, and dumped food waste), not native wildflowers. Furthermore, ticks prefer deep, dense woodland brush or long, un-managed turf grasses. Because this initiative omits tall grasses entirely and utilizes low-profile, clean-growing broadleaf wildflowers, you aren't creating a habitat for pests.Action Step: Keep the edges of your planting bed neatly trimmed, and ensure your trash bin landing pad remains completely clear of vegetation. A clean border shows neighbors the space is actively managed.What happens if a neighbor objects to me having the wildflowers?  The Reality: Because alleys are shared visual spaces, it is natural for neighbors to have different aesthetic preferences or worries about property values. This initiative is strictly a "coalition of the willing," which means we respect everyone's comfort level. You have the right to manage your own property footprint, but keeping communication open and friendly is the best way to prevent friction. Action Step: Keep your plantings strictly contained within your own property footprint, and introduce a clear "cue to care"—such as a neatly mowed edge, a mulch border, or a pollinator sign—to demonstrate that the space is an intentional, beautifully managed garden rather than a patch of neglected weeds. Additional Step: If a neighbor has a specific concern—such as a honeybee allergy or a worry about height—work with them. You might offer to move taller plants further from their property line or focus on butterfly-magnet plants rather than bee-heavy blooms near their immediate walkways. A little neighborly compromise goes a long way in keeping the grassroots spirit of the initiative alive! What if a Metro Code Inspector drives down the alley? The Reality: Metro Nashville Code protects the "managed growth of wildflowers and native plants." Citations only happen when a space looks abandoned, or when traditional turf grass climbs past 12 inches. Action Step: By omitting grasses entirely from your mix, you remove the risk of an inspector mistaking your plot for a neglected lawn. To make your intentional design crystal clear, you can download and print a small, laminated "Native Wildflower Corridor Initiative" sign from our Community Hub to place in your garden bed. This signals to inspectors and neighbors alike that the space is an intentional, protected sanctuary.
